THIS WILL CAUSE SURF TO BUILD RAPIDLY TO AT LEAST 15 TO 20 FEET ACROSS THE BEACHES OF SAN LUIS OBISPO AND WESTERN SANTA BARBARA COUNTIES SUNDAY AFTERNOON...WITH LOCAL SETS OVER 25 FEET QUITE POSSIBLE. DUE TO THE WEST TO EAST MOVEMENT OF THE SWELL...MUCH OF THE SWELL ENERGY WILL SPREAD INTO THE SANTA BARBARA CHANNEL AND THE INNER WATERS...WITH SWELL PEAKING AT 12 TO 17 FEET
IN THESE AREAS LATE SUNDAY. THIS WILL LIKELY PRODUCE SURF OF 10 TO 15 FEET ON WEST FACING BEACHES OF LOS ANGELES...VENTURA AND SOUTHEASTERN SANTA BARBARA COUNTIES...AS WELL AS WESTERN SHORES OF THE ISLANDS. LOCAL SETS OVER 18 FEET ARE POSSIBLE ON EXPOSED
BEACHES.

THE SURF WILL CAUSE A HIGH POTENTIAL FOR RIP CURRENTS ON ALL AREA BEACHES. ALTHOUGH ASTRONOMICAL HIGH TIDES ARE NOT FORECAST TO BE PARTICULARLY HIGH SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY...THE SHEER HEIGHT OF THE SURF WILL YIELD THE POSSIBILITY OF SPILLOVER OR MINOR FLOODING IN

Posted 5/4/2007   Toxic Algae Bloom Causing Increased Strandings of California Sea Lions and Common Dolphins
Removed 7/1/2007
Southern California is currently experiencing increased strandings of California sea lions and common dolphins. It is suspected that the strandings are due to a toxic algal bloom of the diatom Pseudonitzschia australis. The algae produce a biotoxin known as domoic acid. This biotoxin accumulates in anchovies and sardines that feed on the algae and, in turn, affects the sea lions and dolphins that feed on these fish. The most recognizable symptom of ingestion of the biotoxin is seizuring by the affected animals.

Since early April, approximately 7 common dolphins and 116 California sea lions have beached alive with seizures from San Luis Obispo County south to San Diego County. All of the dolphins have died shortly after beaching. Many of the sea lions are currently being treated at various local marine mammal rehabilitation facilities. In addition, approximately 10 dead common dolphins and numerous dead sea lions have also washed ashore. This current event is the largest toxic algal event in California since 2002-2003, when approximately 1000 sea lions and 50 common dolphins were affected.

In order to ensure the best care to those animals that are in the greatest need of treatment, the Fort MacArthur Marine Mammal Care Center (FMMMCC) has implemented an emergency triage and monitoring policy for all beached seals and sea lions in Los Angeles County. Under this temporary policy, all seals and sea lions, other than those with human-related injuries, will remain on the beach for 48 hours prior to being taken to the FMMMCC for treatment. It is expected that many sea lions will expire on the beach during the current event, which may last until early July.

The National Marine Fisheries Service, Southwest Regional Office (NMFS-SWR), supports this policy. The NMFS-SWR is the Federal agency office responsible for managing the pinniped populations in the State of California. The NMFS-SWR anticipates that the current event will not have a major impact on the California sea lion population, which currently numbers between 200,000 and 300,000 animals.

The general public is reminded that beached pinnipeds are wild animals and can be very dangerous, even though they may appear to be lethargic on the beach. The general public should respect the “Marine Mammal: Do Not Disturb” signs that have been posted on many of our local beaches. The NMFS-SWR recommends that the general public maintain a distance of at least 50 feet from these beached animals. To approach any closer may be in violation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

If you have any questions, please contact Joe Cordaro, Wildlife Biologist with the
NMFS-SWR, at (562) 980-4017.

Posted 12/16/2006   Coast Guard Urges Extreme Caution
Removed 12/19/2006
Hazardous Weather Advisory Issued For Southern California Coast Los Angeles, Calif. -- The National Weather Service has issued a marine weather statement for high surf, and hazardous sea conditions throughout the weekend and into early next week. Mariners and beach-visitors can expect seas reaching 6 to 10 feet with wind gusts up to 25 knots with possible higher gusts.

The Coast Guard reminds all boaters and beach visitors to exercise extreme caution due to consistent high swells and strong winds throughout the weekend.

Recreational boating is not advisable for the next several days, and any boaters planning on being out on the water need to take steps to ensure their own safety and the safety of their passengers and other boaters. The following measures should be employed at all times, especially during heavy weather to minimize risk for crew and vessels:

Wear life jackets, especially during heavy weather conditions. By law, mariners are required to carry a life vest for everyone on board. Last year nearly 700 people died in boating accidents in the United States. Of those, 420 people could have been saved had they been wearing the proper personal flotation device.

Use marine band radios instead of commercial cell phones, which have limited coverage and are unreliable when out of sight of land.
Inspect all emergency signaling, communications and navigation equipment to ensure good working condition prior to going underway.
Leave a float plan with someone on shore detailing the vessel's route and estimated departure and arrival times.

Always check with NOAA Weather Radio or your local news media outlet before heading out to sea.

Beach visitors are reminded to avoid standing or climbing on rocks and walking near the water's edge because of the dangerous and unpredictable force of breaking waves. Large waves can break across previously dry areas. If it is possible, avoid the beach and coastal areas until the storm system passes.

Additional boating safety information can be found at http://www.uscgboating.org/ Weather information can be accessed by calling the Marine Weather Forecast recording at 805-988-6610.

Removed 3/31/2006
Gray whales migrate south along the California coast from January through March. The whales migrate from the cold arctic waters to the warm waters of Mexico, where the calves are born. Whales can often be seen (with binoculars) from a high point along the coast. To see the whales up close, a boat trip with trained guides can be a memorable experience.

Posted 12/24/2005   High Surf Advisory - Hazardous Beach Conditions
Removed 1/1/2006
Southern California including the Los Angeles County coastline is currently experiencing a series of large swells coming from the W and WNW, which has produced some extremely large surf ranging from 10’-15’ with even bigger sets. These swells are expected to run through the end of the year.

Due to the extremely large surf and hazardous conditions we are recommending that people not enter the water at this time. Lifeguards have responded to a number of distressed swimmers, surfers, and boaters.

While the County of Los Angeles Fire Department would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Holiday weekend, we also want to remind everyone of the following safety tips;

While on the beach keep young children close at hand
Stay off all Piers , Jetty’s and Rocks during these high surf advisories
Check with your local Lifeguards before participating in any water related activity this includes swimming, surfing, kayaking, and fishing

THESE CURRENT CONDITIONS ARE VERY DANGEROUS!
