Cadet Information |
What is a CADET?
Cadets are Junior Lifeguards that are being groomed to become Lifeguards. They operate under the supervision of a Junior Lifeguard Instructor. Cadets will be challenged to learn lifeguard operations, ocean conditions and rescue techniques, first aid, and CPR. Cadets are also expected to lead younger JGs in practical and physical skills.
Application Process
First a potential Cadet must attend one of the mandatory Cadet informational meetings on January 24th or January 31st. They must be registered as a returning JG during the month of March and select the Cadet box. The JG Application must be mailed in with payment. Once these are completed the potential Cadets must pass a swim test (500 yards in under 7:15), be CPR ceritified, provide one letter of recommendation, show proficiency in a competitive 500-meter ocean swim, go through a formal interview, and be recommended by a former JG Instructor. The interview is a business interview, where a resume and appropriate business attire are recommended. If you are interested in becoming a Cadet, please call the program office at (310) 939-7214 . Cadet applications are due by April 5, 2013.
Swim Test
All applicants must pass a timed 500 yard swim test at the scheduled location and time. The 500 yard distance is 20 lengths of a regulation high school pool. The Junior Lifeguard program is not a swim school and will not prepare each candidate for the Lifeguard swim test and therefore requires above average swimming ability to participate.

Age Grouping
Cadets are based on their age as of July 1, 2013. Cadets must be at least 16 years old and should have participated in the Junior Lifeguard Program for at least two years.
Preparation
Since the Lifeguard swim test requires excellent swimming ability, each Cadet must be in top physical shape to perform. This also requires that each Cadet stay in a swim program and maintain their swimming ability on their own. |
